Mouth Cancer Action Month: It’s not as difficult as you may think to spot the signs

27/11/2023

This November at Precinct Dental we turned blue as we once again marked the annual Mouth Cancer Awareness month. Sadly, one person every 3 hours is lost to mouth cancer, but so many of us are still unaware of the signs and symptoms that we need to look out for.

Mouth cancer, or oral cancer as it is also known includes tumours affecting the lips, tongue, gums, salivary glands, palate (roof of the mouth) and inside of the cheeks.

Tumours can even be found further back in the mouth, around the root of the tongue, soft palate, tonsils, and upper part of the throat.

The most common cancer that is found within these areas is squamous cell carcinoma or SCC.

So, what are the signs and symptoms?

  • Look out for and ulcer or white or red patch anywhere in the mouth that does not heal within 3 weeks.
  • A lump or swelling in the mouth, jaw or neck that persists for more than 3 weeks.
  • Difficulty in chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw or tongue.
  • Tongue numbness.
  • A feeling of something being caught in the throat.
  • Chronic throat pain or hoarseness that persists for more than 6 weeks.
  • Unexplained looseness of teeth.

What do I do if I spot any of the above?

If you notice anything unusual contact your dentist immediately.

Early detection is vital in the treatment of mouth cancer. At Precinct Dental Abingdon, our clinicians thoroughly assess your entire mouth and soft tissues for signs of oral cancer every time you attend a dental examination. For this reason, regular dental examinations are essential regardless of whether you have any teeth issues or not.

Carrying out regular, monthly self – examination at home is important to pick up any early signs in between your dental visits.

  • Feel for any lumps around the lips, neck and jaw.
  • Use a bright light and mirror to look inside the mouth.
  • Tilt your head back to check the roof of your mouth.
  • Pull your cheeks back to view the inside of your mouth and gums.
  • Stick out your tongue to check the top, sides and bottom.

How can I reduce my risk of having mouth cancer?

  • Tobacco use is the main cause of oral cancer.
  • Alcohol consumption can increase the risk 4-fold.
  • Smokers and drinkers are 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer.
  • If you need help to stop smoking speak to our clinicians at Precinct Dental or your local pharmacist for smoking cessation guidance and resources.

At Precinct Dental we are committed to your health and wellbeing. Feel confident and reassured to contact us with any concerns about your oral health and schedule your next dental check-up. It may be the most vital thing you do today.
