What is mouth cancer screening?

Mouth cancer screening is a routine check that we do whenever you come in for an appointment or treatment at Precinct Dental. We closely check your face, neck and mouth for any abnormalities that may require further medical investigation.

Mouth cancer affects thousands of people every day in the UK and around the world.  But with preventative screening leading to early detection, successful recovery rates are much higher.

What are the signs of mouth cancer?

Tumours can appear in and around the mouth on the tongue, lips and gums as well as on the face, neck and throat. Signs that you should not ignore include:

• Growths or lumps
• A bleeding ulcer that does not heal
• Red or white patches on the inside of the mouth
• Persistent pain or discomfort when swallowing

If you have any concerns about your oral health, ask your dentist for advice. While these signs are not necessarily symptoms of mouth cancer, it is advisable to seek a medical opinion as soon as possible.  If your dentist finds anything during the mouth cancer screening check, they will inform you.

Reducing the risks of oral cancer

During an oral health check, your dentist will advise you on actions you can take to reduce the risk of mouth cancer. These include stopping smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, taking regular exercise and eating a balanced diet.
