A dental crown is a new cap that is bonded to the healthy part of existing teeth. A new crown is custom-made to take the same form as the old tooth for a comfortable and precise bite.
Dental crowns can be fabricated from natural colour material such as porcelain, resin, or ceramic as well as gold or non-precious metal alloys.
Depending on the material used and the position of the tooth to be treated, crowns can be virtually invisible for a self-confident smile.
A crown treatment generally takes two visits.
The dentist will start by numbing the area around the tooth to be treated to reduce discomfort during the procedure. Damaged parts of the tooth are removed. In preparation to receive the new crown, the remaining part of the tooth is then reshaped.
Impressions of your teeth are then taken. The dental lab will use these to make your unique new crown. A temporary crown may be fitted while the permanent crown is being prepared.
On your return visit, your dentist will check the fit, shape and aspect of the crown, before bonding it permanently to the prepared tooth. The dental crown restores and strengthens the form and function of damaged or decayed teeth.
Dental crowns are a long-lasting treatment to repair damaged teeth. A crown can generally last up to 15 years.
Technology and dental techniques are advancing all the time. If you have an existing crown you are unhappy with for functional or aesthetic reasons, contact us for an appointment.
A new dental crown can add eating comfort as well as a natural look to your teeth.
